"I don't know of any place that sells homes for 300K in the New York area."
Vitalove, you can buy a studio for 300,000 dollars in Manhattan. And for less, too. And in this soft market with hard-to-sell units, it should be even easier.
You can find a 3br, 1 bathroom in many OK areas of NJ for $300k/$350k. Just search around a little bit, as there are places out there. I know of a couple of such towns. A couple even have really good public transport access and you can be in the city within 20/30 minutes.

I live in Riverdale, NY which is a very nice part of the Bronx along the Hudson river. You can buy a decent size 2-br apartment here, but no homes for $300K.
"eslteacher" mentioned Ossining. I'm currently looking to buy a house and that area seems to be the most affordable. Do you know of any areas/ neighborhoods I should avoid?
Forget brooklyn from someone who lived there for 40 years. I left for staten island, Staten islands worst areas can be considered decent in other boroughs and there is not to many (one section maybe). Some areas are going through
renewals especially st george, tottenville has nice condos for your price and the commute to NYC and brooklyn is nil. Cost of living is relative to NYC and New Jersey but Staten island has lots of parks, culture, activities small condos to
mansions...nice place, progressive legislators but a bit costly.

Try to buy in Chilmark if you can and don't go south of Broadway.
