Is it possible to find a 3 bedroom apartment for under $1,500 a month in Brooklyn or Queens. Mother is looking for someplace cheaper than where we are now, and was thinking of moving out of state. I don't want to leave NY. Where's a good place nearby to check into?

yes, I think it's possible. In Brooklyn try Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst or Midwood. In Queens try Ridgewood, Maspeth or Middle Village.

however, these are pretty far apart areas and some are not subway-accessible (have to take a bus to the train). Where do you have to commute to every day?

Check new york city all apartments classifieds - craigslist click first on the Brooklyn tab, and then put $1500 in the maximum box and select 3 bedroom and hit search. Then go back and do the same for Queens. If you don't select an area first you are likely to get results all the way from Bridgeport CT to Newark NJ (and actually some will probably even pop up from Florida and the Dominican Republic)

edited to say -- I just noticed you are already in Maspeth. I think there must be affordable apartments in the neighborhood you are already in. Have you looked around yet or asked around?

Jim - check out Astorians - Queens, Astoria NY, Long Island City . There are apartments for rent listed there as well as threads where people are talking about how much rent they pay.

Maspeth is already pretty cheap. I don't know if you really want to find a cheaper area than that, as it would probably be dangerous/undesireable.

Check out Southern Brooklyn. I have definitely seen 3 br's for $1,500 in some neighborhoods in Southern Brooklyn.

I just looked on cragslist. There does appear to be some 3 br's available for around $1,500. Have you seen these?
