You would have to take a bus to the subway.

Why does a bus have to be involved? The Airtrain and the E train plus a 10 minute walk at the end (after getting off at 53rd St. and 5th Ave) would get her there. Although I do agree that she should use either the MTA trip planner or Google maps transit directions https://www.google.com/maps/dir/John...1451918760!3e3
Lastly, I don't know why OP is being advised not to take a cab. The only downside is the price, and maybe sitting in traffic. But if someone else is doing the driving, and it prevents you from having to lug your suitcases up and down subway stairs, then I don't see what the problem is.

You know I read JFK but still was thinking LGA. Yes you are right a bus doesn't read to be involved.

Actually the 53rd St/Lexington Avenue does have escalators and there are elevators & escalators from the Airtrain connecting to the E train in Jamaica. So the OP wouldn't have to lug suitcases up and down stairs at all.

Yes, the price of the taxi is what I've been warned about... About how much do you think it would be? I'm willing to pay for convenience.
There is a shuttle that leaves from both JFK and LGA. It's called SuperShuttle. It is a shared ride which means it could take you up to an hour to get to your destination but using the transit system would take about as long. I don't advise taking public transit with your bags and whatnot. It's more of a hassle. There may be more than one shuttle company at these airports, but I've only used SuperShuttle.
They're called SuperShuttle. It's about $20 one way if you book through their website and around $11-20 round-trip on Expedia.com.
Taxi price depends on how honest the driver is. I think I paid $45 the last time I took a taxi from LGA to Greenwich Village, but that was 5 years ago. I wouldn't tell them you are from out of town if they inquire. lol

The taxi website shows a flat fare of $52 PLUS tolls. I'm not sure what the toll would be, but I guess it could include the toll for the Midtown tunnel (between $5.50 and $8). Then you put a tip on top of that and you could be looking at close to $70. http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/pas...cab_rate.shtml
If money is a concern, then I think the Airtrain and the E train is the way to go. I see people every day with luggage on the E train coming from JFK airport and headed into the city (many look to be tourists or international visitors) and they don't seem to having too many problems with it.
Also check into the shuttle options someone mentioned above.
The taxi will probably be ~$60 + tip. I've taken the subway a couple of times to JFK and now each time I fly out of there I say I'm going to take the subway...and then the time rolls around and I find myself in a taxi or uber. "next time I really will take the subway..."
I think it's a pain to take the subway because of then having to take the air train. If money were really tight I would obviously take the subway.
