5 bouroughs
Any part of NJ North of I-195 (esp within I-287)
Long Island (esp Nassau and western suffolk counties)
any part of NY state south of I-84
Fairfield (greenwich stamford Bridgeport Danbury Norwalk) and New Haven (Waterbury New Haven Orange West haven) counties in CT (where a metro north line travels)
I never considered PA part of the area (its not tri state) I hear trenton area people identify with NYC but theyre closer to philly (kinda weird)

that's pretty accurate within your geographical description.
PA is definitely not tri-state/metro. In the past, New Yorkers refered to that entire state as "the poconos".
You're right about Trenton, it's got the whole cherry hill/Philly thing going on there. Their pizzas and sandwiches taste different. They're born out of a different cocoon.

Anything within 25-30 miles of the city is going be super expensive, 40 miles price drop to normal levels.
RE price is a very good gauge whether you are part of the metro/Tri State area. If your home square footage is > $150-$200/sq feet, you are part of the metro/Tri State. Close to the city, we're talking >$300/sq ft.
If you own a 2000 sq foot home in Hopatcong, NJ, Cold Creek, NY or Waterbury CT, and it's value is $200k, you are not. RE value plummets real fast outside the metro zone.
