I already posted this idea in the Baltimore section, but it might get more traction here.

I wonder whether there is variance between regions and what kind of. It may give some insights about the way different people in the world think about NYC.

So, open Google, type "NYC" and wait for the first 3 suggestions. Please report it like this:

I am based in Berlin. NYC --> marathon, guide, subway

I will synthesize the results later.

The most common search I get is if I type NYC Vs and 5 cities pop up like London and San Francisco.

This sounds like a junior high school project---I would say marathon would not be on that list since it is a very limited audience that would care about it but who really cares.

mmh. Maybe you misunderstood the request. It is Google who suggested "Marathon" to me. What does google suggest in your region?

Based in Bronx. NYC ---> vs London, vs San Fransisco

That´s what you get? So people based in the Bronx seem very competitive, or maybe they would like to leave for somewhere else..

It seems that Berlin based people are mostly interested in the marathon.

I forgot to mention: you should delete your history and cookies before because Google tracks your individual searches. If it doesn´t have any clue (as when you´ve just deleted your history) I guess it will take the best approximation: the average search of people in your area. (Or am I mistaken?)

That is exactly why I would not use Google for this purpose. When doing a search I put in as much information as I can in the search box and it gives me close to what I want and then I ignore the random
listings.
