Hello. I'm currently living in Nycha and awaiting my SSI hearing. I dont wanna jump the gun, but is it true that your rent automatically comes out of your monthly SSI check? My friend is on welfare and his rent automatically comes out, so when I asked him he said he would assume it works the same for SSI. Anyone know?

Also, I've heard being on SSI qualifies you for Section8. Is there any truth to that? I thought they had stopped giving out Section8 vouchers. If it does qualify me, can someone tell me which is more of a permanent housing...Nycha, or Section8? Also, is it regular apartments, or building complexes or what?

Thank you.

Another question...

Nycha rent is 30% of your income. What if SSI doesn't give me the minimum for Nycha rent?

No, NYCHA does not automatically take your part of the rent from your SSI check. They do make the 30% calculation of your income which would be included from your SSI check to determine how much you would pay of rent.

Regarding Section 8 they are no longer giving vouchers, therefore, No you do not qualify for Section 8 and whatever SSI gives you that is what will be calculated for your 30% rent.
