There could be many factors for someone struggling here. You can't base your prospective experience upon theirs, so this would be a useless way to determine if you should live here unless you just want to hear horror stories. Unless a person has something in common with you like career, age, financial background, drug user/non-drug user then maybe you could consider their story if any of those factors caused them to struggle in this city.

Your question is too vague. Your success depends on a number of different factors. Your savings, expectations for QOL, preparedness all are important. If you come with a marketable skill and education/experience and are willing to live with roommates or in a basement studio in the outer boroughs, then you should be okay. Provided you save and your job is in demand in NYC. If you have no skills and want posh Manhattan living forget it.
