Hello, I am a new pharmacy student attending Touro Pharmacy school on west 125th st, New York City. I am from out of state and looking for a safe apartment for me and my wife. Any recommendations on apartments or particular areas to look for an apartment? Something close to school would be awesome but I don't think any place in Harlem is safe, is 1825 madison ave Or 2186 fifth avenue in Harlem safe places for apartments?
A 1 bedroom is the minimum size apartment I'm looking for at a price range around 1000-1800 a month, closer to school the better, i really want to minimize commuting as much as possible as I will be selling my car and using public transport. Thank you a head of time for your input.
So you don't think anywhere in Harlem is safe yet you want to attend school there? And to live in a 1 bedroom in Harlem its gonna be no where close to $1000. Put it in your mind you going to be spending $1500 plus

In that price range, you are going to have to expand your search to Upper Manhattan or the Bronx. Depending on how long a commute or what subway line your school is near or whether it is near the 125th St station of Metro North, you could find something in that price range. As for safety, as the poster above says, you will be living in a neighborhood just like the one you will be working in.
For $1,800 a month, one bedroom on a not-so-great block is possible.
Or you might get lucky. If you find a specific place, post the area here for comments.
There are a few buildings just below City College that have lower rents, I think, as in perhaps $1,500 - $1,800.
The owner is trying to turn them around. 100 Convent ? or environs.
There is one building on St. Nicholas, small one-bedroom places, they rent for around $1,300 - $1,500. All are stabilized.
Around 133rd.
