New York City Suburbs (renting, condo, how much)

We may be being transfered to New York City and I don't want to live in the city but I don't know what nice suburbs surround New York City. I would like to have a little space between neighbors and good private schools. Can anyone help with location?

You might want to post in the NYC board. What's your budget? Are you buying or renting? House or condo? How much of a commute is tolerable? Where are you going to be working (East side or West side)?
