I wake up and leave the house earlier than I need to every morning so that I don't have to rush. I find it amusing that so many folks walk at the speed of MACH-5 to get to where they need to quicker. I take my sweet time walking, grab a coffee, enjoy the scenery and have a merry day.
I think that's part of what the problem is today. Some folks can't relax and take life in. They are too busy running from one place to another.
Anyway, I got off on a rant. why do you think everyone chooses to rush instead of just leaving their home a little bit earlier each morning?
I’m NOT a morning person and am comparatively slow in the morning, but still faster than most.
It’s the natural speed I have combined with the energy of the city. I’ll stroll slowly after Sunday brunch in the summer, but the rest of the time I’m walking quickly. I take it with me when I visit friends and family in other cities; they have a hard time keeping up and sometimes get annoyed with me.
But in my opinion, DC people are usually worse than Manhattanites when it comes to this. Nothing against them but they are usually very pretentious and act like they're important and busy.
Of course there are many exceptions, but yeah, this is my experience.
Some people have jobs to get to or things to do. They're not on leisure walks and are moving their feet to get from Point A to Point B. Sidenote: I've also noticed that the fast walkers usually tend to be slim or in good shape, whereas those moving slowly...well...

Keep in mind the base mode of transportation in New York: whereas you may not consider yourself a fast walking-type, if you live in the surburbs, you've probably found yourself driving quickly to get to an appt. you're late to. People walk as a function of their everyday life; thus, we do it efficiently, just as you probably don't take the leisurely way to work as a matter of everyday routine.
