I was looking at train times and it appears that brooklyn and harlem are about the same travel time. Harlem is actually slightly longer. But being in Harlem has you still on the island where as Brooklyn also seems like a great place but you might not feel like you are in the city the same way anymore? Brooklyn would also be closer to the airport though...

It depends on:
What you can afford
Where in Manhattan you are working (understand that commuting from one borough to another could potentially be a shorter trip than within a borough)
Preference: there are different neighborhoods within each borough and each have a different vibe. In Brooklyn, you are still in the city. Some neighborhoods are more urban than others but you are certainly still in the city. Again, check out different neighborhoods and see what you like. Even within Manhattan you have different vibes.
People who want good advice should be more specific with their questions.
Saying "If one was working in manhattan which would be better to live in... Harlem or Brooklyn?" is so vague that deserves really no other response than say 'harlem/brooklyn is better' or whatever such a vague answer is supposed to mean.
If people were smarter they would ask;
What would be the best neighborhood to live for a XY yr old who is/likes X,Y,Z (list personality traits or interests). My job is going to be around X area, and my budget for a 1br apt/studio is $XXX.
This guy right here, wants you guys, to ask him each question separetely.
I'm not asking where people think a particular kind of person should live. I'm asking the -details left out- question because everyone knows their own points of value to look for. There may be a very obvious harlem / brooklyn answer to this question, how should I know? I have expectations in answers but I don't want to snuff out points I haven't thought about yet.
So for you...
We can afford to buy outright in harlem and brooklyn and I'm not interested in the bronx or queens. As for personality we just want the closest to a 1st class experience for living in new york that we can get and be as close to work as possible.
