New York City is often referred to 'the City that Never Sleeps', but is New York really a 24 hour city?

Walking around the city, most retail stores are open Monday - Saturday from 10 AM until 6 - 8 PM (Malls until 9.30 PM), and Sundays 11 AM or 12 PM until 5 - 7 PM (or some closed). Yes, most pharmacies are open 24 hours, some restaurants, and few stores around Times Square. Public transportation do run 24 hours. However, the city despite its population and enormous visitors is still very quite after 3 AM and early Sunday mornings. Christmas Day, Easter Sunday & Thanksgiving is also very quite except for parades on some streets like 5th Ave.

NO - Las Vegas should be the city that never sleeps not nyc.

You can do so much more in vegas and the state of NV than nYc

In vegas and NV but not in nyc You can gamble 24/7 you can get married 24.7 you can drink liquor 24/7 you can go clubbing 24/7 you can get legal prostitutes and have FUN 24/7 bowling 24/7 see a movie 24/7 go shopping for clothing, electonics, computers, cell phones, guns, gym equipment, furniture etc all at walmart 24.7 I can go on but i am sure you got the picture.

I consider NYC to be a 24/7 city as there is public transportation 24/7 and one can obtain food and medicine 24/7. There are stores, pharmacies and some restaurants in the outer boroughs that are also open 24/7. Most other places in the world you don't have any of these services 24/7. So yes NYC is "the city that never sleeps".

Its more related to its nightlife, clubs and restaurants. There are numerous diners that are open 24/7 in each and every boro.

Transplants are boringly irritating.

Its not that the city sleeps, its YOUR world and life which is asleep!!

Looking for something or someone to 'invite' you *in*. This isn't Las Vegas or Austin or Spain, NYC is a place of exclusivity!! This city unlike others, does not cater to the 'average'.

An average Transplant and/or an average Tourist, as well as outer borough provincials, are precisely the "excluded".

So, if you find yourself looking for 24 hour NYC, odds are, you will never find it. Because it is not for you.....

*****

Anyway, this subject has been discussed before, or did you think you had an epiphany?

There are probably more people at work over night in NYC than the daytime working population of most U.S cities. That's what should define a 24-hour city.

Vegas is not even a real city...maybe a 24-hour theme park.

Being a 24 hour city is not that good. Thank God New York City isn't 24 hour city except certain things.
The city needs a break and sleep too... I wish everything was shut down on Sundays as it used to be to observe the Christian sabbath.

Let's also shut down the city on Fridays and Saturdays for the Muslim and Jewish sabbaths.
