How is the safety of the area around the 149th street subway stop on the 6 train. Specifically 149th street and Union. Safety wise, not to live but to be very late at night
b carful walkin by subway at nite tho cuz a homie got robbed twice ther they took his ipod. so b careful just dnt have ne money on u n hide ya ipod dont wear the earbuds
I don't live far from there...it's fairly quiet as not that many people live there. They are in the final stages of rehabbing 2 large tenements into working class housing (from Section 8), called "The Aurea", incomes from $30K for a 1 bedroom to $58K for a 3 bedroom, depending on family size. http://www.nyc.gov/html/hpd/download...rketing-Ad.pdf
They are also building a huge new development called "Crossroads Plaza" by 149th and Union, on the vacant lot. It will be 37,000 SF of retail space and 430 new apts, with the 1st building rentals from $31K -$80K. The other 2 buildings will be middle income condos and a school. Looks awesome.
These "is it safe?" threads...you gotta love 'em! (Might as well; they're never going to end).
jdm, here's the bottom line: how you feel about any neighborhood is completely subjective. One person might think it's OK, and another one will swear to you it's the worst place on Earth. Go there and see how you feel.
I agree check it out for yourself.. I personally work in the are and actually lived in the area for about 15 years. I feel safe, like in any neighborhood at night you should be careful and watch your surrounding..
One of the best blocks in the area is between 149th and 152nd along Concord...literally every building is new, treed, and working/middle class. They are doing the same with Wales Ave also...new construction 3 family homes with driveways, garages, yards, etc, and a couple of the remaining warehouses have mysteriously burned down....one has already been rehabbed into working class rentals on the corner of 150th. Big changes are on the way.

This is sad. It was one of the last blocks in South Bronx which reminded of 70's to early 90's era.
