I wonder how this is going to affect the residents - particularly the old-school residents on Mainstreet.
Don't care too much about the yuppie Johnny-come-latelies with their dogs and their Starbucks and their sushi restaurant, but I grew up on the Island and my dad lives in Island House and I visit him quite often, and I'm just wondering about the day-to-day effect this sort of thing will have on the community. In the long term are they going to do things like increase subway service to and from the island to compensate for the surge in commuter traffic this will create? Has anyone tried getting on a subway from Roosevelt Island into Manhattan before 10 am on a weekday? You have to wait through an average of 3 trains before you can pack yourself on.
Just musing. Yay for progress and all that. I just hope they remember that there are a lot of people living on the island that need to get on and off it...
