Hey guys, I'm a college aged student and am looking for my first place to rent. What are some of the cheaper areas? I'd be looking for a one bedroom apartment or a studio perhaps. I wouldn't mind living in a suburb outside the city if its cheaper as long as its fairly close and easy enough to get to the city. Would definitely be looking for something under $1,000 though

Under 1000 will put you in the ghetto without a roommate. With a roommate, you can afford some good neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn in a 2 bedroom.
Also, too many people refer to Manhattan as "the city" and the boroughs as "not the city." They are just as much "the city" as Manhattan is. All parts of New York City are New York City. There are more people in Brooklyn than in Manhattan. There are also more people in Queens than in Manhattan.
You may also be able to afford a studio in Flushing or other Queens neighborhoods. I'd go for Queens if your college is in Midtown and Brooklyn if your college is in Downtown.
