That was the Fascination Arcade, it’s long gone. (it had the 1000 incandescent clear bulb "script like" sparkling Marquee)

Times Square is more like Disneyland now. You won’t find New Yorkers and can walk for blocks not hearing one person speaking English.
48th St Guitars shops all gone or baught by Sam Ash (including Mannys)

BB Kings is the biggest rip-off BTW, they list the $25+ shows at Midnight then hold the bands till 3 AM to ring the bar regesters ($14 drinks) when the last LIRR out is 3:20AM

^^ lol. Yeah, Times SQ is a joke now. I just HATE walking down 42 at night. During the day it's well, "okay" at most. However, when night falls, hell breaks loose. All the B&TC people come out like roaches to look at the lights. You damn near have to walk in the street just to get by. Also, damn people pushing baby strollers down the block! I have nothing against that. Just make room for people! Geez, please. MAKE ROOM!

Times SQ IMO, is now overrated. Food is nasty. (Applebees there is disgusting) Too many tourist. Too many hoodlums hanging out during the week-ends. People just standing around in the MIDDLE of the block. Ahh.. Sorry for going off like this. I just need to let this out..

There used to be a placed called Barcode that was what the OP was describing. I don't think it is there anymore. Maybe it has a different name now.

I don't even get why tourists go to Times Square. I mean you come all the way to NYC from God knows where to go to Red Lobster or Applebees. Its so lame. The only thing cool about that area are the broadway plays and the huge advertising boards. I can see how the boards are cool to people who have never seen anything like that. Just try to stay on the edge of the sidewalk please! Let the people behind you walk!

Yes it was called Barcode and they shut it down...I think I heard someone say there was a shooting there and a bunch of fights always broke out.. so they shut it down.
