I'm a single black woman who is moving to NY with her 10 year old son for work (investment firm on avenue of the americas). I want to live in Manhattan or Brooklyn and want somewhere safe. My son is currently in Catholic school here in SF and I would like to send him to a good school (public or private). The problem is that he was recently diagnosed with ADD (after having a bad 4th grade school year in terms of his grades).

Questions:

1) If I want to pay no more than $4,000/month for rent - where should I look for housing?

2) Are private schools automatically shut out as a choice given my son's subpar grades last year?

any advice is greatly appreciated.

You should have no problem finding an apartment given your rent limit.

However, with regard to private schools, those in Manhattan require ERB testing and an interview, along with an application and references. It's also too late for this coming school year. You need to contact individual schools about their policies regarding ADD.
