Getting set up in apartment (New York, York: apartments, rental, consignment)

Hey all,

Few questions / random thoughs that hopefully ye can help me with.

Im moving to New York with Work in June and have picked out a couple of neighbourhoods where I'll be looking to get setup in a 1br.

Then earlier today someone asked me what i am going to do since all apartments come unfurnished - which i replied "well... im obviously going to...." - then i realised i havent a clue what im going to do (I'm coming from overseas so will literally have a suit case with clothes.

First off do any apartments come furnished? And if so what is the best way to find them

Assuming I have to get an unfurinshed apartment - whats the best/cheapest way to go about furnishing the apartment. Wont have a car (unless people recommend renting one for moving) and wont have anyone to help me move furniture (could you "hire" people for the day to help)

Do people generally just goto Ikea? Or is there another good souce of cheap / decent furniture (not looking for anything special - just the basics to get set up with)

Basically im looking for anyones recommendations / personal stories for making an unfurnished apartment a home.

Most apartments in NYC for rental are unfurnished. There is an IKEA in Brooklyn that one can find cheap/decent furniture.

Furnished apartments are rare & cost extra.

IKEA is a savior to many new New Yorkers. They deliver. Or you can rent a car/uhaul and bring it back yourself.

Consignment/ thrift stores/ flea markets are also good for cheap furnishings. Due to bed bug worries, I would shy away from bringing home any upholstered furniture, but for coffe tables, wooden chairs, bookcases, etc - go for it!

I agree w/ IKEA. Bob's furniture might also be a possiblity but I've heard their customer and delivery service suck, so choose this option at your own risk.

Craigs list has a lot of furniture and everything else you can get cheap.
But you'll need a van or something.
One possiblity is to rent that flat bed truck from Home Depot for
a few hours. It's cheap if you keep the hours down.
