On Saturday I need to get from 18th street to Columbia University via subway. From what I can tell it looks like I should take the 1 train to 116th street. Does this sound correct? Anyway, I'm not quite sure that the 1 train will stop at 18th street or not.

Yes,it stops at 18th and the Columbia gate is at 116th.Simple
If you want to get fancy you can get on the uptown 2 train at 14th St instead and get off at 96th and walk across the platform and get the 1 train for the rest of the trip to 116th.It might be a few minutes faster.

Maybe it's because I was a conductor for more than five years, but I believe that if I live to be 120 years old, I'll never understand why someone could look at the subway map...and then have to ask whether a particular train stops at a given station. If the map says that the #1 train stops at 18 Street, how does that become an issue?

I wonder this myself...the NYC subway map is extremely easy to read/understand, but people see "omg lots of colors!" and decide that they don't get it.

To be fair, there are service changes and construction on the weekends.

This is true. The 1 has not been running on weekends lately. The 2 and 3 trains have been making local stops.

Then that's not an issue, either. You simply take whichever train makes the stop you need! (Another thing I've noticed is that people will walk right past a poster explaining service changes...then complain that nobody told them what's going on!)

Well, yes, but the OP obviously chose to ask here instead. If that bugs you, don't read it.

If the OP isn't from the city, that's fine. Whatever, I hope he/she got to take the trip just fine. I was on the 1 yesterday myself, and it stopped at 18th.
You can always tell when it's an out-of-towner who doesn't know what's happening. But it is kind of annoying when city residents refuse to read the posters that are plastered everywhere (they're starting to add all kinds of languages too, I've noticed), or listen to the conductors' announcements, and then ask me what's going on.
My favorite is when we're stopped at a station and someone sticks their head in the door and yells "is this the ___ train?!?!" and no one responds. I've never seen a train that didn't have its number or letter plastered all over the exterior.
