I will be working at Children's Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx (3415 Bainbridge Ave), but would like to live in Manhattan. I'm 27, am looking to live in a young professional (but fun) area, hoping for not a terrible/long commute. I was told to try to live by the 4, 6 or D. Any suggestions of what neighborhoods I should look into? Thanks
One of the cheapest and closest to your work neighborhoods would be the parts of The upper East Side around 1st Avenue and York Avenue in the 80's.You can probably find a studio in that neighborhood in your range..maybe a walk up or something.
You will be about a 15 min walk to the Lexington Ave subway at 86th Street where you can get the 4 train to Norwood. The subway ride will be about 30 minutes. It's not the most exciting neighborhood but it's ok and one of the only ones you can afford in Manhattan.
If you are willing to live in The Bronx you might want to consider Bedford Park( walk to work),Woodlawn(5 minute bus ride to work) or Riverdale(15 minute bus ride to work). All three are perfectly nice and much, much less expensive. You could probably find a very nice studio for 800 or 900/mo.They are probably just not what you would consider "fun" although Bedford Park and Norwood have a lot of Fordham students.
Montefiore is a really good children's hospital by the way.... congrats!
Well, i'm thinking in the range of $1,500 to $1,800.
with that money why not live in riverdale and shorten ur commute to work? 4/5/6 line is the most congested in the city and i cringe the few times a year i have to take it when i get off of work.

Well to be honest, I have always wanted to live in Manhattan but have never had the opportunity with school, and now with my future job I thought i'd have the chance I know with my budget finding something decent is going to be difficult. What is Riverdale like?
Riverdale is a very nice neighborhood, and it's pretty quiet by city standards. It is located on the Hudson, and has housing that ranges from apartments to large single-family homes. It is also convenient to Manhattan via express bus, Metro-North, or subway (though most of the neighborhood is separated from the subway).
Locally, there are restaurants, grocery stores, and many conveniences. The neighborhood is popular with families, though there are some DINKs, and singles. You would be in easy reach of Manhattan, and can get a larger/nicer apartment than your budget will allow in Manhattan. And, the commute is a breeze to Montefiore, so you would have time/energy to go to Manhattan as the mood strikes.
