It's the fastest way to get around the city. When I lived on the UES, I saw women carrying $2,500+++ handbags and wearing $700 shoes on the subway every day. Also saw Woody Harrelson on several occasions, Chelsea Clinton, and other "famous" neighbors on the 6 train.
Unless they are so famous / high-profile that there is a security threat or they have the money ($100-250k per year) to keep a driver/car on retainer and the patience to sit in traffic constantly, I imagine New Yorkers from every walk of life take mass transit and walk. To some, I'm sure it's "dirty" and "beneath" them, but not to all.
ive heard a yuppie say i only take cabs b/c the subway is dirty lmao only those rejects might think its 'unchic'. otherwise, everyone else does.
lol...i say let em waste $9.00 for a on a one-way trip down the block.
I see Wall Street types on the trains all the time. Idk if they think it's beneath them, but they understand that it's far more practical to use public transit than to drive to work. Besides aren't rich people suppose to be cheap? lol.
Most of the real upper class type people( except the old ladies) in NY ride the subways and busses frequently.
The ones who think it is beneath them are usually the aspiring middle class people who think everyone will think better of them if they make a big deal about not riding the subways. Then the real upper class people laugh at them behind their backs for being so pretentious and foolish.
I've got a friend whose parents are worth well over $100 million and have a $25 million apartment that looks like a museum over looking Central Park. I try not to sit down or touch anything when I'm there because I'm afraid of breaking something. Her parents have a driver and never take the subway or a taxi.
My friend, however, takes the subway all the time. She's very down to earth, lives in a 1 bedroom apartment, has a normal job making $65k/year, and you would never knew she came from money unless she told you.
So I guess my answer is some of the ultra rich would never think of getting on the subway.
Don't know about "class", but those of any income choose to spend their earnings as they prefer...it's a free country, right?
Know several, then-<25yo traders (who at time earned middle-income wages/bonuses for NYC, <$1MM/yr) who would drive selves around Manhattan in a new Mercedes...safest, most comfortable/convenient way to get around town for workaholics who arrive at office <6AM and leave after >6PM (and garages are all over Manhattan where relevant)
Traders often tend to drive selves everywhere, perhaps b/c they are risk-oriented quant guys who understand terror risk of mass transit and risks of dangerous, inept cabbies driving POS Fords...and value of their own time, safety and other opportunity costs, even as middle-income traders, let alone when their income dramatically rises later in their 20s
And most of hard-core car nuts leave Manhattan as soon as poss in their careers and migrate to SiliconValley/SF or BeverlyHills offices, so can drive everywhere in a car mecca w/perf car-oriented yr-round weather, roads and more spacious garages
