How abundant are available taxis from the airport to the French Quarter on a Sunday? At around noon on Sunday, will there be a problem finding a cab for a quick ride to the FQ? If not, how much of a wait will there be? Thanks.

Should not be a problem. I've never had to wait for a taxi at MSY no matter what time I arrived.

Taxis are plentiful. Don't think you'd have a problem ~ especially since you're going to the FQ.

Three years ago we boarded a cab driven by a Haitian girl who didn't know the city lay-out as well as she should have. Our room was on Dauphine across from the Quarter (in the Marigny), and she not only didn't know that but she went in circles, got lost, and we couldn't communicate well at all because her English was so poor. I couldn't believe that, with all the people needing jobs post-Katrina, that they couldn't find someone better to hire. But we got there, and today the memory is rather humorous.

There's also a shuttle that goes to the FQ...might be cheaper than a cab...

Thanks all for your help. It will be our first time to NOLA. Heard unfavorable stories about the shuttle, so we're thinking cab.

Last time we got a cab from MSY, there were these people at the airport who asked our destination, then went to the appropriate cab. They were official, and very helpful, don't know what they were called though. MSY is such a small airport, you should'nt have any hassles finding a cab.
Frankly. after about 24 hours on one form of plane or another, I would've taken a hansom cab. but we got to our destination just fine.

There used to be "short haul" and "long haul" cabs. If you were going into the city or the suburbs, short or longer trip. Those guys are the taxi directors, who get the appropriate cab for the trip, some would rather do quick turn-arounds, some want a good long trip and hopefully big tip from tourists!

They are forced to have pos devices(credit card swipe things) now. I know a local company was complaining because they didn't have the money to have them installed in their fleet so they cannot legally run the route until they have them. They were saying that the msy to wherever was the majority of there business. Prolly some politicians brother inlaw owns a cab fleet and had the law passed to cut out competition and increase barrier of entry to the business. Its funny how things work here... But that is all an assumption, most big cities have that law. I doubt it has changd the cost of the trip. I've heard hiring a limo is more economical if you have tons of luggage and several people to transport.

There's a set fee from the airport to the FQ that should be posted in the cab. I haven't taken one in a while, so don't know the current rate.
