Hi, I am moving to New Orleans in August for Tulane graduate school. I am moving from Austin and I am 25 and single. I want to live in a "cool" area of town, definitely an apartment over a house, but also a safe area and not too far from Tulane, but do not mind driving. I would love any recommendations for a nice, updated 1 bedroom apartments under $1200.

So far I am interested in River Garden St. Andrews, American Can, and crescent club.

I am really clueless and need some help because I know nothing about these areas of town.

You would be best in Uptown near Tulane and Loyola. I'm not sure of the downriver boundary but anywhere you can find a studio or apartment around that area will be fine. It's a young and beautiful neighborhood close to the oldest streetcar line in the country and safe.

Skip River Garden and Crescent Club. Out of the three you mentioned, American Can is your best bet. Not too much of a drive, and it's a "hip" place. I would also check out the Blue Plate Lofts.

I wouldn't say so. New Orleans is good and bad in patches rather than swaths. American Can is in a good area.

I would pass on those. They're across the street from the jail. Last time I was there there were a lot of sketchy people hanging around outside.
