Coop's-- no reservations but some of the best food in the city.

If you can get up to the City Park area, Parkway is not to be missed for the po boys. Yum.

Not to be picky but Mother's is the quintessential tourist trap. There's always a line of tourists out the door. You'd be hard-pressed to find a local in there.

My first job was at Mother's. They're expensive, and the portions are small, but I can almost taste the debris biscuits I ate on break... Two ingredients and a mess, but it was heaven on a plate.

Alligator needs to be cooked slowly to soften it. Alligator Sauce Piquant is the best.

I worked a block from Mother's for 3 and a half years. Those aren't tourists. They're mostly workers going for lunch. It's easy walking distance from many local businesses and the food is good. You'll find most of the restaurants get full around lunch time. But the lines always chased me off so I went to eat at the food court in Place St Charles. Cheap food that tastes good (I recommend Papa's Pizza. They make really awesome pasta and pizza, some of the best). I also used to eat at Commerce (fatty down home delicious type soul food for a good price. As my husband says, it's a greasy spoon but I suggest the chicken) on Camp St.

Off topic but my mother, who was born in the city in 1912, was amused when alligator became fashionable. She said back in the day, only poor people who couldn't afford meat would go shoot it and eat it.
