I am taking a vacation in New Orleans at the end of this month with my mom and daughter (14). We will be there for a week. We are staying close to the French Quarters but not in it. Is there anything you can recommend we do or places we can go eat? My mom and I would like to listen to some live music but having a teen with us makes it a little difficult to go to bars. Are there any good restaurants that play live music? Is there anything you would recommend that a 14-year-old would enjoy? We are taking the train down there (from Chicago) and won't have a car. We plan on mostly walking around or taking a cab places. Both me and my mom have been there before but it has been a while. Thanks for any suggestions!

btw, I have a "guide to New Orleans" book but I always like to find out what the locals like to do or recommend. We aren't really into touristy stuff.

Hi, prinsessa

Check out the live music calender for the days you will be in town:Livewire Music Event Calendar | WWOZ New Orleans 90.7 FM

Here are some places that I know are "all ages" all the time:
Rock'n'Bowl
Neutral Ground Coffee House
Margaritaville
Mulates
Preservation Hall
Snug Harbor
Louisiana Music Factory

Some of the other venues like House of Blues can be all ages, but it depends on the particular show.

If you want to get out of the tourist zone, walk Magazine street. There are nice little clusters of shops and restaurants from the expressway all the way up to Audubon Park. There's also a bus line on Magazine that runs from downtown all the way up to the park should you get tired of walking. Check out the Map/Schedule:

Also, while you're in the Uptown area, take the St. Charles Streetcar out to Carrollton. Lots of shops and restaurants. Oak St. and Maple St. have a lot of commerce.

Cafe Atchafalaya has a great sunday brunch with music
Bayou Barn is a drive away but on sundays has cajun music & food you will never forget www.bayoubarn.net/history.htm
Check nola.com for events when you are in town
Avoid Bourbon street 1/2 the places are strip clubs I recommend frenchman street live jazz clubs where you can eat & hear without cover charge (but not see the music you may have to be 18 to see the band also pay a cover charge) so your daughter should be able to get in. Snub harbor is one.
Hamburgers - Yo Mamma's, Port of Call, Luke, Cowbell
Po'Boys - Mothers, Parkway bakery & tavern
Expensive eats - Nola, Emerils, Commanders palace
Wensday night - free concert in lafayette square & delicous food from nearby restraunts $5+
I recommend driving out and visiting a plantation home - so much history
