I have only visited New Orleans once and it was only fora few days. What neighborhood would be good for an 18 year old to live in? Preferably for cheap because I'll be working for Americorps and living off a stipend ( although I may also be able to find a job as a tarot reader in the french quarter)

Any advice to doing this?

Bywater, Lower Garden District, Irish Channel are all close to downtown with reasonable rents. They are all within walking distance to public transportation and easy biking distance to the French Quarter and other parts of the city and they are popular with the younger, more bohemian crowd.

There's also the large student population around Tulane and Loyola Universities. The Carrollton and Black Pearl neighborhoods house a lot of students and have reasonable rents. However its a little more preppy and is a few miles from downtown and the Quarter.
