Can anyone tell me if the highway that leads to Timberon off of US54 (above Orogrande) is paved all the way? Is it called NM24? I just wondered if there is a quicker way to get to ELP than going on US82 and Cloudcroft, Alamogordo?

The last time I was in that area (little over a year ago) Hwy 24 connected to CR E038, which eventually turns into Owens-Prather Road, aka Hwy 506.

Going from Timberon you could take FR537 into CR C001/CR E012, which runs into Owens-Prather (506). BUT that's all dirt out there. There's a small paved uphill section on 506, but that's it. I'm driven about 70% of those back country roads in that area starting from Dell City, TX into Alamo-go-no-where (I lived there from 95-02) or from 506 back into Cloudcroft. Honestly, your best bet is probably going to still be Hwy 82 to 54, though you'd save mileage by going to 506. As long as they are maintained after a rain storm you can typically do about 45-50 safely, IMHO, on 506 and those county roads. But there will be sections where you'll drop to 25-35. Said speeds were done in my best friend's old toyota corolla wagon, later his 97 4x4 ford ranger, and in my 2004 4x4 ford ranger - this was back in high school (96-00) and early college (00-03). The ranger is a little modified though. It can be a nice drive; I've see pronghorn, elk, coyote, snakes, and even golden eagles out there.

If it wasn't for the stupid Safety Corridor on 82 you'd be able to do 55 from Highrolls down to the La Luz intersection. That's what it once was before the state put in the "we-can't-drive-so-we're-lowering-the-speed-limit" stretch.

FWIW, Hwy 24 only loops from just outside of Mayhill, through Weed, Avis, Piñon, and Dunken, where it connects back to 82.

EDIT: the county roads listed are per the New Mexico Atlas & Gazetteer by DeLorme, 2006 edition.

It is gravel, dirt and with the rains we have been having some of it could be very rough or washed out. My BIL went that way ONCE and got a flat tire. No cell service where he was.

I would still go through CC on the paved road.

506 is the Owen Prather Highway....and it does go through Fort Bliss Military Reservation.
