Looking at trailmaps, it looks like there's quite an OHV trail system in the Carson National Forest from Espaniola through Taos and Questa, especially west of the Rio Grande in the south San Juan area. How are the trails around the area? I'm assuming they probably aren't very crowded? Are they fairly technical or something you could take an adventure bike on? I know they Sangre side is pretty steep so those probably provide all the challenge one wants. Also, I'm assuming people wouldn't care too much if you had an e-bike vs a regular bicycle on the trails? Up in Salida CO they were pretty adamant that the trails around town were for NON-motorized vehicles.
For hiking, is that mostly concentrated around the wildernesses around Taos and the Rio Grande gorge or are people out and about all over? How about paddleboarding on smooth water, is there much? Also, what about cross country skiing, it seems like the South San Juan area would be good for that this time of year?
I'm planning for my next rental in march / april, I'm working from home full time. The more I look at it, the more I like north NM over CO mountain towns. I just want to be outside, doesn't necessarily have to be technical climbing or above treeline. Winter is my least favorite season (I don't mind it, I just like summer more) and the snow till mid June is a bit worrying. Also, Taos just has more going on socially speaking whereas CO mountain towns seem to be more purely outdoor rec focused or stupid expensive and very touristy.
I don't think there will be much snow-free trail in March/April in Carson. Lots of cross-country skiing north of Chama in the Cumbres Pass area, and Valle Vidal, although too early to tell how the conditions will be then. Could be good or too late. There won't be crowds.
The Forest Service considers e-bikes to be motorized vehicles so they are not allowed on any trails. They increase the numbers of people going further into the forest which is detrimental to wildlife.
