winnie has learned:.

It's best to go at night, because the green glass is still radioactive and glows in the dark. This makes the ground look like a starry sky with green stars.

Wouldn't have seen the landing itself but the shuttle would've been clearly visible. Sadly, it only seems to rain in Florida when I'm on vacation there.

Maybe in another 25 years.

I too remember being glued to the TV that day in '82. My dad was actually on hand during the landing and loves to reminisce about it. My consolation prize was watching the shuttle take off on it's piggy back ride home. At the time I didn't realize what a damn good consolation prize that was.

It was a really cool thing to be sure, ikncnu. Just too bad it's so rare. Your dad was lucky to see it up close like that!

On a brighter note for me, I get to go quail hunting on the Range today...it's really good out there! Basically the only way you can get on WSMR if you don't work there is to hunt. Sometimes we'll "hunt" with our eyes , in the truck, and check out some the areas that are off the beaten path. It really is beautiful. Makes you see the difference that cattle grazing makes. It's more significant than you might you think. Rhodes Canyon is absolutely spectacular. You get the full monty of the Jornada del Muerto.

They have a pretty good golf course inside White Sands Missile Range. Food, Beer, and decent golf.

As already posted there are 2 different places. However a correction on WSMR, there are people that live there. I had a great green chile cheese burger there last weekend at one of several eating places. So yes there are eating places.

I guess maybe I should clarify this a little bit. WSMR is NOT open for the person driving by the come in to find a place for lunch.
Unless you are "badged" (have an ID that allows you in) or on an approved list and are with someone who is badged then it is just like any other military base as far as I know.

True. They have a guard gate just like any other Base would.

TKO, let us know how the quail hunting was. Was out there yesterday and saw quite a few of them.
The way the day went we should have been hunting quail instead of coyotes

About 30 years ago my wife and I were on a trip to see her sister in Arizona and we stopped for rest (we were in a van) in the old parking lot at the White Sands Monument. I got up before dawn and brewed a cup of coffee on the wall around the parking lot and watched the sun rise over the Sacramento Mountains. I was just entranced. That is when I fell in love with New Mexico and have been trying to figure out how to get back.
