HI,
We are going to Clayton lake from Phoenix one stop on our way to Indiana. We are going to be pulling a 32' travel trailer and would like to have the safest route possible.
No big difference between I40 and I25. With I40 you've got to contend with Tijeras canyon just east of Albuquerque. With I40 you've got the steeper grade (La Bajada) as you approach Santa Fe ( 80 years ago the only way cars could make it up was to go in reverse.) But neither of these pose any problems for trailers. There's always a lot of RVs, truckers, campers, etc on these routes. The only time these areas pose any difficulties are in winter snowstorms.
Or if you're in a very underpowered 250cc motorcyle like I was in high school trying to make it up La Bajada I'd have to scoot way over to the right hand lane and it was a struggle.
I25 would likely be the better route. Going through Tucumcari is a little further in total and a little further on 2-lane (incly NM rather than US highway).
It will be a long day using either route, if that's your intent.
