The state has been out here setting traps (epidemiologist) and our neighbors are telling us there are ferrel cats carrying plague-has anyone seen or heard what is going on? The state agency isn't giving us much
information, my guess is they are collecting all the data before they report.
I do know plague is still an issue here in NM. This is in North Albuquerque Acres.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department, the New Mexico Department of Health and the Bernalillo County Health Protection Section are warning people to not get near stray, sick animals after a cat recently died from the plague.
A Northeast Heights couple and a handful of City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department employees are now on fever watch after they were exposed to the animal on April 2. Fever watch means the individuals are being monitored for symptoms, but are not being quarantined.
The fever watch is a precautionary measure. The city doesn’t anticipate that the individuals will contract the plague or be contagious.
Residents are being asked to be vigilant and report sick or dead animals.
The City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department, the New Mexico Department of Health and the Bernalillo County Health Protection Section announced today that a stray cat found in North Albuquerque Acres was confirmed to have died of plague. A recent case of plague in a dog in the same vicinity could indicate re-emergence of plague in a part of the city where it was no longer thought to be found.

Poncho, thank you very much! I don't watch local TV, just read the local paper. I just got off the phone and 311 will patch people through to urban biology/zoonotics, the real problem is with rodents that are carrying plague.

Yes - there are lots of wild animals in NM that frequently plague; I'd imagine that feral cats are only a problem insofar as they rub shoulders with domestic cats that might be more likely to come into human spaces.
what's interesting about that map is it looks like the USA is the only 1st World country
that has an issue with the plague.
big powerful country and still has the plague that wiped out half of europe centuries
ago. I guess it's hard to irradicate, or it is not a high priority to do so.
