We're thinking of moving to JC w/elementary school kids, and are wondering if anyone can share their experience raising older kids in Jersey City (as opposed to toddlers)... Especially wondering about a sense of community with other parents, after school activities and safety. Btw, we would enroll them in private school or try for a charter.

It might be okay to put them into a public school in elementary, but as for Middle and High school you might want to check private schools out.

Though Mc Nair Acadamy is a public school in JC that is one of the best schools in NJ.. Dr Ronald Mc Nair Academy High School, Jersey City New Jersey / NJ school information and ethnic makeup
But you have to take and pass a test before you get in.

Steer away from Greenville and the Bergen/Lafeyette area. Downtown, Journal Square, and The Heights are all good areas

Good Luck, JC is becoming a lot like a bigger Hoboken.

A lot, and I mean a LOT, of young parents are raising kids in the Downtown neighborhoods of JC. Urban life is officially back in style (see Hoboken, JC, and Brooklyn). Yuppie central in all 3 of those areas. The thing is, you really have to send the kids to private school. If you're OK with that, then DEF look into JC. There are a boatload of young, professional parents doing just that right now in JC (Downtown specifically).

More over hyping by Tommyc, I havnt been anywhere in NYC that didnt have the same amount of stroller pushers as JC. As far as sending your child to school in JC I would defently look into private schools. St Peters Prep is a very good school if they're around or close to the highschool level, as far as for youngsters im not to sure although I think theres a good private school on Marin blvd. for kids.
