I just moved out of NJ 2 years ago. To be honest, 50k will not be enough if that is the sole income of your household. NJ is a very expensive state and many residents have 2-4 incomes....some have 2 jobs from 2 people to make the mortgage and taxes. Depending on where you live, the taxes will vary, but overall, the state property taxes are very high. Many families hire nannies to take care of their children so that they can have enough $$ to make the monthly bills.
What type of place do you like to live in? If you like the suburban or city life - NJ is good for you. It is VERY expensive to own over an acre - if you can find a lot that large these days.
Do you have a family? Is it just your husband and you?
I'm not Italian and probably by the time you read this you will have made up your mind. My very good friend was born in Italy and her family is still there, she and her husband have lived in Old Bridge, owned a pizzeria there for years. They recently built a home in Italy to return to when they retire. PM me and I will provide her email! She travels back to Italy regularly to lecture and can help give some good advice!!
Location: Newton, NJ (but my heart is in Tennessee)

$50K a year could still work in Sussex County if you manage your money well. There are some nice houses at around $300,000 and if you can afford a good down payment you may be able to find something.
