I've been wanting HDTV and that recording thingy for 2 years now and my husband says to wait for Verizon FIOS so we can get everything bundled together (internet and tv). I know they put the wires through the yard over the summer but have no idea when they will start offering service- anyone have an in with Verizon?

I live in Toms River. They've been wiring for FIOS in my neighborhood. I just went online 2 nights ago and it seems that my area is "in". My concern is having to sign a contract...and how much extra they are going to charge for additional wiring in the house. My current cable wiring is about 20 years old...it really needs to be rewired. I live east of Fischer Blvd.

Doesn't Verizon offer a bundle with DirecTV?
I have had DirecTV for about 9 years and I love it.

My parents got FIOS this past spring and they don't charge anything for the wiring- that's part of how they try to get you to use them. You just agree to get it wired for their company and you're done. You just pay for the service.

BUt, of course, ask first. Maybe it has changed.

I -love- FIOS.
We recently had to have some wires rerun here, and they did it free of charge. This was less than a month ago. They will upgrade your wiring for you.

I would love to hear anyone's opinions on FIOS. I have also been considering them over Cablevision for some time now. Not sure if it's worth it with the wiring and savings.

Thanks

*nod*

But Verizon DSL service is next to worthless. I pay 50% more than my parents (they don't need much), and get about 5-7 times the speed.

thanks,

so, are you saying that even if we wait and use Verizon for the HDTV and such- we are better off keeping our Comcast for the internet?

No- I think that FIOS is far superior to cable for internet access. it's direct access to the internet, rather than cable which essentially shares internet access over a hub with other subscribers.

I am not home right now, otherwise I would show you a screencap of what i get when I use speedtest.net to test my internet connection. Usually it's 20K down, 16K or so up - which is UNHEARD of. Usually upload speeds are less than 1K. The regular speed of uploads is 5K. We pay for extended uploads, which is between 15K and 20K.
