I've been lurking around here a lot lately and searched ad nauseum for this info, haven't quite found it, though I've learned a lot about NJ. My wife and I are about to take jobs in Newark. We are, of course, looking for a place to live. Specifically, a house in a good school district that's not too far (maybe 30-40 minutes) from Newark. We'd both be working very close to the Newark Penn train station, so that limits towns to the Raritan, NE, and Coastal NJT lines (I think). We'd probably be able to afford a ~$550k house, if necessary. We don't expect extravagant for that, but a nice house, (small) yard, and garage, in a nice neighborhood should be doable, right?

So far, I've seen that Westfield, Cranford, and Metuchen come pretty highly recommended around here. I get the feeling that Westfield, and probably Cranford too, will be too expensive for us to get anything decent, but I could easily be wrong there. It's difficult to tell from tiny pictures on real estate web sites. So far, I've been just looking at towns with train stations, because it's easier to gauge commutes from the NJT schedule, but I know that I'm overlooking lots of places doing it that way. What other towns should we really be looking at? Also, are there other easy options for getting to Newark from that north or west that I'm unaware of?

I work in Newark and live in Sayreville. You could either drive or take the train from nearby South Amboy.

How much do you want to spend? Do you want to rent or buy? If you do a search and type in Newark you will find a zillion threads on this.

Not being picky, but did you actually read my original post? Somewhere in the vicinity of $550,000, which strongly implies buying. And I'm pretty sure I said that I did search quite a bit and found lots of specific questions about particular towns, but nothing that addressed my actual question. I wouldn't be surprised if I missed something - there are lots of Newark threads - but I did look.

In any case, thanks jmdurett, that's the type of info I'm looking for.

I did read and totally missed it; my apologies....

Anywho; there are a ton of threads on this, thus suggesting typing in Newark for your search.

Maplewood/South Orange is a great area right on the train line.

What time do you need to be at work? Reason I ask...you can expand your search out into areas where 550K will get you a beautiful home! Areas out my way... 90 mins train but if you drive and leave early enough...you could do it by car in about 45 to 60 mins. tops. Worth considering?

Marlboro, NJ isn't a far ride from the Matawan Train stations. It has great schools, Freehold Regional School District. At that price you can get something really decent there.

West Orange is definitely the way to go. The school systems are great, so much to do in town ice skating, movies, take the kids to the turtle back zoo, golfing, country clubs available, at the eagle rock reservation there's a wonderful view of NYC, great summer programs for the kids oh the list goes on an on...only 10 miles from Newark. See for yourself
