Hello, We are a middle aged Asian Indian couple with young children relocating to NJ in June this year and looking for advice on good towns to set up roots. A few areas that appear promising on paper are: 1. Chester, 2. Mendham, 3. Basking Ridge, 4. Warren, 5. Scotch plains, 6.Westfield, 7. Montgomery school district, 8/9. Chatham/Summit - but we may be priced out of these. Thoughts and alternatives? Specifically - is there an existing Indian community in Chester and Mendham?

Where are you coming from? Dallas, TX
Why are you moving? New Job
Where will you be working ? If NYC, what part of NYC? Raritan, NJ

Will you buy or rent? Buy
What is your budget ? $800K - $1.2M
What kind of place are you looking for ? Newer construction, 3000-4000 sq ft.

Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? Spouse and three kids (11, 7, 4)
Do you need/want good public schools? Yes!

Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in - Families with young children, safe, preferably with some Indian community and a bit of space between houses.

List three things that are important to you in order of importance. Good schools, Newer construction or recent remodel, easy commute to Raritan.

Thanks!

I’m not too intimately familiar with the areas and some I have only driven through or maybe been to once it twice, but I think the strongest Indian community of the towns you listed would be in Montgomery. There may be some in Chester and Mendham, but j think overall they may be more white.

I think Montgomery would be closest to Raritan as well. And you probably get your greatest bang for your buck there since it is furthest from NYC. No need to pay any kind of premium for NYC proximity/trains/ease of commute in your case.

I would add Montclaire and maybe New Providence.

Westfield is ideal, and rather cheap for its equivalents.

All the towns you listed are really nice but probably closer to the ~95% white in population. Nobody would care if you moved to the area, but there wouldn't be an Indian population. Indians tend live in Middlesex Counties. There is a community of Indians near Parsippany, with grocery stores and restaurants, however I believe many of the Indians there are transient, living in apartment complexes on temporary work visas for some of the corporations in Parsippany.

Montgomery is 36% Asian (where Indians fall into for the Census) and 32% foreign born.

Yes you're right, the data i was looking at was from the 2000 census provided by Google. "The racial makeup of the township was 84.55% White, 2.07% African-American, 0.09% Native American, and 11.52% Asian American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.21% of the population."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montgo...e%20population.

Montgomery borders Middlesex County where it seems Indians are all taking over.

Mercer to Middlesex and the parts of Somerset directly in between, which Montgomery is a part of. West Windsor, East Windsor, Plainsboro, Montgomery, Franklin, Piscataway, North Brunswick, South Brunswick, East Brunswick, Edison, Woodbridge.

Out of the towns mentioned Chester/Mendham has the least number of indian americans. The ones there are there are mostly doctors/entrepreneurs. As another poster said, Montgomery would have your desired racial presence, followed by places like Basking Ridge (only Hills sub-division, which is huge, but acerace is small). Warren, Westfield, Scotch Plains have growing indian americans. Scotch plains is the closest to Edison, Oak Tree Road(which is the place where most Indian Americans live and shop). If you are looking more acerage, you bet are Montgomery or Warren. Chester, Mendham you would get more acerage, newer home and even homes with a pool in your budget (which other places in your list wont have most likely), but you wont get a community, its more rural than all others.
