Hi all,

is newark (near penn station) and harrison a good living area for a 20 something working professional? I find the rent in jersey city too high and saw some newer apartment complex in the newark/harrison areas that are more reasonable. but i don't know if the areas in general are good. any advice is appreciated!

I wouldnt live in Newark if the rent was for free. Alot of crime there, I would be too scared.

Newark I would not recommend. Harrison is a good deal better, imho, far less violent crime, but still a significant amount of property crime. Break ins and auto theft are pretty high, however crime overall has been going down. Its not that bad an area.

Downtown by Penn Station is okay. You can try Eleven80's site for info, although with the amount of singles living there, studios and 1brs might be hard to come by. The thing with downtown is Eleven80 is basically the ONLY residential development in the business district near Penn Station. They have a few small brownstones just north of NJPAC and they are renovating one next to the arena but they might be sold already.

If you live in Harrison/Ironbound, make sure it is close to the PATH station if you thrive on transit. Both can range from decent to downright awful depending on where you look, such as blocks. The newer complex you are referring to is in Harrison called River Park, along the Passaic. The distance to the PATH is almost the same distance to Broad St station but PATH is cheaper. It's kinda industrial but meh.

Ignore the sheltered Jerseyites on here. Good luck.

You need to hire a body guard to exist in Newark. How big of a gun do you carry? Very very high crime area.

Strange I know nothing about Harrison even though I grew up in the area.
