Hello. Could I get by in Trenton on $97,000 grand a year? I would be renting a studio or one-bedroom in a nicer area. I absolutely do not want to live in a dangerous neighborhood where, inter alia, I would have to worry about people breaking into my apartment while at work. I would be prepared to live in the suburbs if that is the price of safety. My budget for rent is about 2K, though I would prefer to come in at 1.5K. I will be living alone.
What do you guys think? If it's doable, could you recommend some areas to live?
Ideally, I would like to find an apartment building with concrete between the floors so that I can bring in some exercise equipment, including dumbbells up to 75 pounds. I also wouldn't mind renting a house, though I would imagine that that would be out of my price range. Finally, I don't want a long commute. Preferably no more than 30-35 minutes, and ideally around 15.
You should check out the sticky at the top of the forum. Trenton's a big place, so finding out where you're 15 minutes from is going to be tough without some more precise information.
Check out Plainsboro (lots of rental options in your range), Lawrenceville (lots of young people and college students) maybe Bordentown. All 3 towns are within 15-30 minutes of Trenton, they are relatively safe.

This is the address of the employer: 402 East State Street, Trenton, NJ 08608
The US courthouse? That at least explains the "inter alia". If you want the true NJ experience, live in Morrisville,PA and learn what it's like to have to cross a river every day.
Seriously, you probably don't want to live in Trenton proper but the surrounding townships are fine (except sometimes right near the Trenton border)

Do you agree w/ the ones mentioned in this thread?
No need to go as far as Cranbury, other than that, sure.
....all of twenty mins.
