i've struck out too. I actually bought a bag of playgorund sand the other day and I have a big box of cat litter. It may not melt the snow but it may make it less slippery. I've been looking since sometime last week and keep stirking out

Default Ice Melt

South Jersey over here..so I may not be able to help directly.

However, I went to Home Depot a couple of weeks ago and they had ZERO in stock. One of the employees there said Ice Melt has been going out almost immediately after they get it in stock.

So, I tried the much smaller Tru Value / Ace Hardware Store in my neighborhood in Camden County...They had TONS of Ice Melt, several different brands and types (including the pet safe variety), so I loaded up!

If you have a Tru Value or Ace Hardware (or similar smaller place), give them a try. They see a LOT less people on average vs. a Home Depot.

Good Luck!

also, check masonry supply places. Some sell in 'bulk'... if you are a regular customer, some will bag some for you if they have no pre-packaged available

yeah, the pet friendly one is quite pricey and not quite as effective. i'll try a few smaller places, but all the places in my town are out. Tru Value, and 2 local hardware stores

Actually, the cat litter does help to melt the snow & ice--as long as you are very patient.
On the path where I take my dog to the backyard, I can't use salt, so I used cat litter to reduce the chance of slipping on the compacted snow that had turned to ice.

Well, after a few days, the area on which I spread the cat litter has actually melted down to the bare ground. Apparently the dark color of the cat litter absorbs just enough sunlight to heat the area a bit, and the result is melting. However, it did take ~4 days for it to do its "magic".

Just picked up a big bag at 7-11. Of course I'm in South Jersey so won't help most of you. Guy told me someone came in and wanted to buy every bag (about 50 of them) and he told the guy no. Only 2 per customer. Sounds like a good plan.
