I will use Google and I just purchased Garmin. I tried it this morning to drive local and it is really neat.
Just be sure not to blindly follow the GPS. Take a look at the route that it comes up with before you go to make sure it makes sense... once in a while some of them direct you to take a shorter route that may go through a really crappy area.
I drive straight through this way I don't have to stay at a possible dumpy hotel on Rt. 95. Leave 2AM(pack the car beforehand) You should be fine around Washington take the loop around Richmond. Arrival time 8 or 9 at night. This is without kids and have sandwiches and snacks in the cooler and the car gassed up. It's tough but I've done it numerous times.

Don't forget to keep your empty bottles so you don't waste time with bathroom breaks.

Not a good idea you need to stretch your legs every couple of hrs. A pee break accomplishes that for you.
I prefer I78, I81 going South into NC but in the Winter and the possibility of snow in the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mtns. of VA I think I would stick to I95.
April 1st. never mind probably past the snow season.

Does anyone book a room at a hotel beforehand for the overnight on the way down? I did this years ago to avoid the hassle of finding a place and 5rates. I also like driving from point A to point B.
Also, I am renting a condo and I can't get it it until a Saturday which means I have to leave NJ early Friday morning.

We didn't because we didn't know exactly where we would be - what if we could go further or we were too tired and wanted to stop earlier. On our way day we got in an accident, our nerves were rattled, so we stopped a couple hours earlier. If we would have booked a room it wouldn't have worked out.

This is true. On the other hand, you can compare rates and reviews beforehand if you book ahead. You're likely to save money and/or get a better hotel this way but not booking ahead may be more convenient as you're not obligated to drive a certain amount the first day.
