Hello, we will be moving to NJ this year and I had looked at Bloomfield and was surprised to see how low the public schools are rated in that town. The realtor said I could pay for Glen Ridge schools? Is this true? and how much would it be? and why are the schools rated so low?? I suppose all those taxes they charge don't guarantee good schools.

If anyone has any information to share that would be great.

Thank you.

What level of school are you talking about? The grade schools in Bloomfield vary and for the most part, the more expensive the part of town, the better the school. So Brookdale Elementary is good.
The high schools is not considered that great, and the middle school probably falls somewhere in between. But as always, experiences can vary and you can go to a top-rated school and do miserably and go to a lower-rated one and do quite well.

I've never heard anything about paying to send your children to Glen Ridge. I don't think that's possible in terms of public schools.

I'll add Oakview Elementary school to the list. The HS is fine for most kids with parent support, motivation, etc.

I can't remember which, but a coworker of mine who grew up in Bloomfield was telling me which elementary schools to move to and which to avoid. the schools are not bad. when you say they are rated low, which ratings are you looking at? Remember...being low compared to millburn or other top districts doesn't mean the school is bad.

and of course...taxes don't guarantee good schools. neither do various ranking metrics.

Oakview and Brookdale are the two good elementary schools in Bloomfield.

This is all good, however we aren't looking for elementary, but middle and high schools and everywhere we have looked the schools in Bloomfield are rated 3-4 at the most. We are coming from 8-9 rated schools and we have done our research and because public schools other than the elementary schools are not really rated what we would prefer, we will search for a home in other towns. Thanks anyway.

What's your budget? Why not just buy in neighboring Glen Ridge?

Huge cost difference. Tom Cruise went to Glen Ridge High.

I would look into Private Schools.
