I am moving to ridgewood from out of state, and i am interested in buying a house in the old country club section. The first time I saw the house, I could hear trains but they didnt seem that close / loud.
However my second visit to the house I heard train noise (whistle) that was MUCH louder. I checked google maps and it appears there are commercial railroad tracks in Hawthorne near Goffle Rd.
Does anyone know how often there are freight trains running on those tracks? How noisy is it if you lived in the country club neighborhood? What time of day do you hear the commercial trains?
I have no idea but you can bet whatever schedule they have now, it will change. Not worth the risk and resale. You say commercial, do you mean freight?
I can't help the OP since I'm not from NJ, but when I lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I used to love hearing train sounds even at 4 a.m. when I couldn't sleep. They NEVER woke me up. I think it's the kind of noise you just get used to and in some ways don't even "hear" after awhile (as opposed to, say, neighbors blasting their stereos whenever they feel like it, which I for one would NEVER be able to get used to).
When I moved to New Hampshire, I missed hearing the train sounds!
I grew up on Air Force bases and would hear planes all day long. They just became background noise and not in the least disturbing. I suspect that would happen if you moved there.
I lived in RW for 20 years and had to google "old country club section" to figure out where it was. i'm guessing that's something the realtors came up with.
that area off of Lincoln Rd is probably the most exclusive area of Ridgewood, with many homes well north of 2 million. I really don't think resale is an issue there. i just peaked at the google map, your'e not really even that close to the rail line, even if you're out on Mountain Ave or Knollwood.
Freight trains on that line come through once a day, if that. Lived on the line in Midland Park for a while. My husband bitched and moaned because I rented a house with tracks behind it then he slept through the very first train that came through after we moved in.
It won't bother you.
Like the other poster, never heard of "old country club" section of Ridgewood, and I livex in the area for 50 years.
Country club must have been REALLY old! Nice area, though, no matter what you call it.
