Hi,

I am planning to buy a used car in New Jersey (currently staying), after 2 months I will have to relocate to Pittsburg. Is buying a car in New Jersey and re-register in Pittsburg is cheaper or wait for two months and buy after re-location. Which is the better way? All advices are welcome

Thanks in advance...

I'm guessing the sales tax is cheaper in PA. Not sure if Pittsburgh has a city/local sales tax. And you will have to pay for two registrations if you buy it in NJ.

You would have to pay the NJ Sales tax, I think PA might be cheaper, look that up online, then you'd have to register and title it in NJ which is a yearly fee for the reg and the title fee is now more expensive maybe $90 ? last time I went?

Then you'd have to rereg and title the car in PA.

Thinking if you have an address in PA where you will be moving to, you could move your licenese over to there and do all the paperwork from the PA address saving doing the fees twice.

You need a real address because they will mail the car title to you at that address.

You would probably be better off just buying it in PA or using a PA address to buy it now if that was a possibility. PA sales tax is 6% on a car versus 7% in NJ and if you bought it in NJ, you would pay registration here and then have to pay to re-register it in PA and there is no refund given. It would ultimately be a waste of money if you can just wait the two months.
