I might move to Jersey city soon. I work in lower Manhattan. I don't want to buy a monthly pass for nyc and buy a smart link card. Can I use the NYC metro card for both NYC and the path train? I know it said it doesn't accept unlimited metro cards, but if I buy a $80 dollar nyc metro card will I be able to transfer to the path train with it? Also how much is the bus fare near journal square? It's a little confusing. I heard they have different fares for different zones. I walk 20 min to the path and walk 18 min to my job and that seems ridiculous.
If you work in Lower Manhattan , why can't you walk from the PATH? Its only 4-5 blocks an the Subway might put you father from your work....Lower Manhattan is very small compared to Midtown or Chinatown...
from the path I get off at world trade center and walk to the a,c or e...to canal....or I could just walk to canal st, but that's a long walk. I know one person that walks back and forth every day. Just wondering if I had other options...walking would save me money though.
Can you buy a fold up bike? I know alot of people who like to save $$$ and take the Subway or PATH to a certain area and instead of connecting to a different service bike , the fold up bike is becoming more and more common...might be worth a purchase...
Yes, a standard pay-per-use metrocard works for both PATH and MTA. There's no transfer; you have to pay both fares, so it's going to cost you $8.00 round trip.

Actually, it would be $8.50 ($2 + $2.25 = $4.25 * 2 = $8.50), since they raised the PATH fare to $2.
In any case, the OP can buy a 2-zone monthly pass and take the HBLR to the #126 bus for $98. The bus pass works on the HBLR at no extra charge. This would only help if the OP worked by the Port Authority Bus Terminal, though.
If the OP worked in the West Village or along 6th Avenue in Midtown, he can take the 33rd Street PATH train.
I guess the OP will just have to suck it up and deal with the 20 minute walk from the PATH to work.
I know a friend who used to scoot his way to the light rail. He had one with a little larger wheel (like 8 or 10 inch diameter) and it could fold also.
