My basement took on about 6 inch of water. I bought the house a year ago and of course the previous owners claimed the basement did not take on water well that was false. No sump pump but there is a trap go figure. I have Hurricane insurance but reading liberty mutual site, it indicates that does not cover flooding. Does that make sense?
Renters insurance is the same. Hurricane insurance covers wind damage and you have to get flood insurance separately (most insurance companies don't offer it but most get federal flood insurance). A lot might depend on the company. Both my niece's, who live within 2 miles of each other put in claims for damage to siding after the same storm last year, one was denied by their company and the other approved by a different insurer.
If it's rainwater which got into your basement, you're probably covered. If it's river water or groundwater, you're probably SOL.
Its a mixture of both i guess. Rain got into the basement from ground seepage and the sewers backed up. I have a sewer trap but no sump pump. I do have sewer back up and sump pump coverage.

I was about to say, you're out of luck, but you did mention that you have the sewer and sump pump coverage. This should cover you up to $5000; if the water wasn't from a river/lake overflowing, it's covered by Homeowners rather than Flood (most of the problems with katrina were that *both* events probably happened in many cases).

I doubt it. Live on the boarder of Belleville, no where near Passaic River. The Fire dept finally got around to my home @ 11pm last night to pump the water out of the basement. They said they were working since 5am. Eventhough we lost almost everything in the Family room and Laundry room, I couldn't Thank them enough once they finished pumping out the water. I'm so glad I had a agreat agent when I purchased my home. She was fully aware of the Bloomfield/Belleville area and strongly recommended that I purchase the Hurracane and Sewer Protection.
That is not true. Flood is defined as any rising water regardless of it source. Flood is excluded from ALL homeowners policies and you would need a seperate flood insurance policy in order for that to be covered.
