Ugh. Been there, done that. I filed bankruptcy last year. It's a really hard thing to do, but at least I've got a fresh start. It's a really good idea to visit
several lawyers and ask plenty of questions before making a decision. Most lawyers are very willing to see you for a free consultation. Even if you change your mind and/or file
pro se (by yourself), you will find it very helpful.
I filed
pro se which is really difficult and time consuming. I just did not have $2000 to spend on a lawyer. If I had, I certainly would have hired one! I did interview an attorney named
Ralph Ferro in Little Falls, who seemed quite nice but I just didn't have the money to retain him.
There are terrific books on bankruptcy by Nolo. I don't know if you want to file Chapter 7 or Chapter 13, but it is a very helpful book, even if you retain an attorney.
There is a great forum called Bankruptcy Forum, which is enormously helpful to read before filing BK. You have to create an account before asking any questions, though. I wouldn't have made it through without them!
