Has anybody had any recessed (concealed/high hats) lighting installed in an existing home recently? A contractor quoted us $150 per light and I was wondering if its reasonable. I thought it was too high but I might be wrong. Would really appreciate any information as we have to make decision very soon.

don't know how handy you are, but that's a pretty good DIY candidate

yes, just had 4 installed a few weeks ago. it was included in the quote of our whole job, but i'd say that's approximately the going rate. when we built 7 yrs ago, the electrician charged $100 for every light over what we got standard - but remember, this was before sheetrock was put up.

Do you get the choose the canister? I'd just make sure it's the type you want.

We're building, and ours are $125 per, so that is a fine quote.

Thanks Tahiti. We have never had recessed lighting before and having recently moved to NJ, we don't know anybody where we can go and see what kinds are commonly used. Would you be able to recommend what kind of canister we should get for our bedroom and family room ?

Thanks Juliann1977 for the info. Can you give me more details about what kind of canister/bulb/trim etc would be better for a bedroom and family room?

I'm doing this myself right now..is that just the labor, or does it include the light as well? You need to find out what kind of lights you're getting and how much they cost first, because the prices can vary a great deal. I think I paid $50 per light.

It is not that hard to do, and I would never pay $100 per light for labor
I might pay as much as $50 per hour for a skilled tradesman.

Depending on how the beams run, and where the power needs to come from. It should take a skilled person no more than 3 hours to install 4 lights, In an existing ceiling without access from above.

If you have access from above, or it's done before sheetrock..we're talking an hour.

You're probably asking the wrong person. I know that they have white trim and that they are not the large ones. Ours are all the same, and we're doing some in the family room, kitchen, and master bedroom.

I paid $120 9 months ago. Drywall was not up yet though. The price included bulbs, which doesnt seem like a big deal, but they add up. We had over 100 high hats installed.

Wow!

I need to do some side work. I used to install these things another lifetime ago....

We used Juno lights and trims. We mostly used the white baffle trims for an R-30 bulb. I like the halogen lamps that shine a bright white as opposed to the yellowish or faint looking color of a regular bulb. It looks very crisp with the halogens. You may want dimmers in the bedrooms. Maybe consider miniature recessed in some rooms as well.

In the bedrooms, I would go with an airtight fixture, so it would be insulated from the attic infiltration.

Get 2 or 3 estimates. Good luck.
