I'm moving to New Jersey from India. Here are my requirements, 1 hour drive to the airport as my husband is a freq flier. I am looking for living in a safe neighbourhood with shopping and restaurents. However the priority is for my daughter who will be attending elementary school (grade 3) so it has to be a good school district. My housing budget in $1500 including utilities.
Any suggestions ?

There are high Indian populations in Parsippany (Morris County), and Edison (Middlesex County). Both are within 1 hour of Newark Airport. I think 1500 will work in your budget, if you are renting. Both towns have very good school systems.

You should be able to find a 1BR unit around $1200 in Edison, Woodbridge, Nutley, Metuchen, Bridgewater, North Brunswick, Scotch Plains, etc. All good towns within 1 hr drive from Newark airport.

Fords/woodbridge is probably your best bet.

Do you have any requirements for Square Footage for your apt? What would be a good school for you? Greatschools.net or education.com have in-state ratings for schools. These ratings range from 1 to 10. A rating of 6 and below means that your child could bring home foul language. You should aim for ratings of 7 and above. A rating alone will not do anything, there are probably a million other factors that would influence your childs education and development. But as a parent, you have only so much information that you can act upon and you need to make the best use of it. In NJ, you have to be very careful. You could move right across the street from where you are currently and your child could end up in a great school or an absolutely crappy school. (I have seen parents literally crying because of some re-zoning and their kids had to change schools)

I think you are asking for way too much in NJ for $1500. You will have better options if you are open to "up" your budget to may be $1800 or so. You could try S.Brunswick, Edison (North only), N.Brunswick areas. Not far from airport and there is a direct train into the Airport. Taxi fares are around $80-$85 incl tolls/tips to airport from N.Brunswick. Ofcourse, airport parking is $25 to $30 per day.

I would recommend Plainsboro. It fits your budget and has excellent schools.
