I know there are two high schools- Ramapo and Indian Hills. Our real estate agent says that we get to pick which one we want our kids to attend. However, someone (who used to live in Franklin Lakes a while ago) recently told me there are school zones, and you don't get a choice... not sure who's right. Has the policy changed?

Yes, I think you get to pick. I don't know what they do if there isn't enough room at one school over another though. Maybe a lottery, not sure.

I do know the University Programs have switched things up a bit, since each UP is only at one of the schools. So the students who want a certain UP will go to whatever school it is at.

I would call the RIH BOE if you're concerned about the details, but it's really not a big deal. Both schools are very good, and as I said, with the UPs now, which one is more desirable to an individual student depends on a lot of factors.

Wow, good to know! Thanks! Although it'll be a while before my 11 month old goes to high school...

My nephew is in his 1st year at Indian Hills and they had the opportunity to choose. Both are pretty good.

A marginal athlete who would still like to participate at the varsity level might be better off at Indian Hills. This was the case with my nephew.

I think Ramapo is more cutthroat and IIRC Indian Hills has Franklin Lakes & Oakland kids and Ramapo has Franklin Lakes & Wyckoff kids. Oakland is considered a bit more middle class than FL & Wyckoff and IH might be considered not as elite for that reason.

No, all three towns have equal access to both schools now.

Didn't know that. But is Ramapo still considered "better" than IH (it's kind of subjective i suppose)? I always heard that years ago.

On state testing, Ramapo scores slightly better than Indian Hills. Sports-wise, Ramapo teams are generally better, with the exception of Hills softball.
