Isnt that ridiculous?

Is there a way to apply without being charged $25?

Not to my knowledge. I don't like it either, however in some ways I suppose it knocks down the applicant pool to those who are most qualified. Nobody would apply on a whim if you have to fork over $25 for the privilege.

It could actually be a benefit. I know someone who works for one of NJ's largest healthcare companies who put out a job announcement for a gig in the company's PR office. She received over 800 applications within a few days. Her solution was throwing out all of them and just asking around and hiring someone she knew from the local newspaper who wanted the job. She said there was absolutely no way she could ever go through all of the applications.

Many people want these jobs so they can get away with charging the $25
plus it keeps unqualified people from applying

Another sign of how corrupt this state is. Hopefully this is another thing Christie will cut.

What about federal?

You can apply for federal jobs for free, but don't even think about getting hired unless you're a veteran. The veterans preference rules for federal hiring are insane, and at this point the applicant pool is so huge it's almost impossible to get any kind of federal job (unless you're a vet or have a hook, ie. a job announcement was written with you specifically in mind) unless you have some kind of obscure skill like a nuclear physicist or something like that.

I know someone who works in federal hiring who says they get more than a thousand - yes, a thousand - apps for almost every job.

I think the fee can be waived, but don't know exactly how to go about it. Call DOP and ask them, they should be able to tell you.
It used to be a $5 fee, $25 is just ridiculous!
